On Tuesday I was working on Lake Sammamish during mid-day, and saw black
swifts over the lake much of the time. At the north/northeast end of the
lake we put up another purple martin box. The box that was put up a few
weeks ago, to the N/NW, is occupied by tree or violet green swallows; we got
a glimpse of the young, didn't see the parents. We may have seen swifts
more than we saw swallows (they may have just stayed around us more,
allowing lots of time for observation). It was a nice day except for the
rain squall and the cold. The mouth of Pine Lake creek had a merganser and
about 8 tiny merganslings.
Surface water temperatures were about 15 degrees Celsius, and secchi disc
(transparency) readings were about 4 meters.
