A couple of days ago we had an official looking truck parked by the end
of our drive-way. When my hubby went out and asked what was up he was
greeted by a very friendly rep from the Fish & Wildlife Service who was
observing the eagle nest that is about 1/4 mile across a field from our
house. He went on to discuss how they had been observing these birds
for several years and were assuming they were offspring of another nest
in the area that they have been observing for about 6 years. Well we
have been watching this pair since 1990. If someone had contacted us
when they started watching these birds I could of kept notes for them or
something. I guess I just wonder why they didn't ask the locals for any
information they might have. He seemed surprised we had even noticed
anything! (Gee - there are a pair of huge birds flying over my yard for
almost 10 years, eating ducklings out of our manure lagoon, carrying
fish out of the river nearby, fledging two chicks nearly every year but
us poor dumb farm folk won't notice such things) This man was very nice
and informative but it just seems to me that maybe officialdom should
stop assuming the worst of people and give them a chance to help once in
awhile! Both sides would be better off.
