Marguerite:

If you want to beat the starlings and still put out the suet, you might try
what I did. I bought one of those green, circular suet holders that is about
8" in diameter made of 1" square, heavy screening with the suet holder in
the center. As it is sold, the starlings can reach in and get the suet
easity. But... cut the metal clips that hold the suit holder in place on one
side and swing it against the back and re-fasten it. Leave the suet in the
plastic case it comes in, with that against the back. Cut out the plastic on
the front side, leaving about a one inch frame around it. The starlings
can't reach it; the flickers can. All small birds go in and feast.
