Took a short hike through the woods near my home today and came across
three female Wild Turkeys and their kids. The first two were together
(I understand they are social) and we were about 30 feet apart. After
regarding each other for a few moments we backed away from each other and
took different routes. About 200 yards further on I came across another
female with at least two young. It's quite an experience to encouter
birds this large unexpectedly! I'd guess the adults were about 2 1/2 to
three feet to the head. They had a very prominent buffy sub-terminal
tail band. Now I've got to catch a glimpse of the male!
