When my friend and I were out birding at Wenas on Friday we came across
several Black-headed Grosbeaks singing. Unable to see the first one we came
upon, my friend said,"Red-eyed Vireo, right?". I said I was pretty sure it
was the grosbeak because even though there is a similarity in the songs, the
grosbeaks sings notes that are richer and more fluid. The Red-eyed Vireo is
more segmented and the notes are a little harsher. When we came upon the
next grosbeak, I pointed out the richness and fluidity of the sound. Sure
enough it was the grosbeak. Being able to distinguish the subtleties in
bird songs is difficult. I'm not sure if having a background in music
helps. At least I find I have something to compare it to. We came across a
Catbird too, and my friend at first thought it was a Towhee. But the
songs/calls are really different. But there are so many "mockingbirds" out
there. I've been surprised at times myself. When identifying a bird by
call alone I always use caution, especially if it's a new bird.
