Wow, what a nice weekend, if a tad too hot (hey! no throwing things!!)
My hummers have diminished in numbers. For a while I had at least a dozen and
was filling three feeders three times a day. Now....only a few. However, I
had a treat Friday night, my first and so far only Nighthawk. He was flying
quite high and did not do his vrooming dive.
Also I'm hearing lots of savannah sparrows, the house sparrows already have a
batch of babies out the nest and the goldfinches are everywhere I've got one
goldfinch that's strangley colored...he's pale yellow, his head is the
yellowest part of him and his breast and back are almost white.
Also hearing Black headed grosbeaks, western tanagers and solitary vireos. (I
can tell the difference now, thanks, Diann!!!).
Finally,last year I had a strange pair here..a barn swallow and a violet
green swallow were quite cozy....one of them built a typical barn swallow
nest on the side of my barn. They did not raise any babies, however.
This spring I put up a nest cup for the barn swallows, and the same pair are
showing serious interest in it. Has anyone ever heard of such a pairing
before?
