I thought people who are eager to see Red-breasted Sapsuckers should know
about a reliable place to find them--here on the Evergreen campus. We
had at least two pairs last summer, and there's at least one pair here
now. I haven't tried to count them lately. Just enter the campus
through the main entrance off Evergreen Parkway, which is called
Charles McCann Plaza. It's a broad area, divided into two one-way
roads. Almost immediately after entering, turn left, stop(!). and cross
the road that leads out. Pass a rather small parking area on the right
and continue for perhaps 100 m from the Plaza into Parking Lot B, a large
area divided by curved strips of grass and trees. Park there and look
around. They nest in the area you've just entered, at the south end of
the parking lot. We also have Pileateds there regularly, and if you walk
off into the nearby woods you can find typical birds of these mixed
forests, such as Wilson's or Black-throated Gray Warblers.
