<<<We just returned from a fishing trip to a small lake west of Tonasket,
which is close to the Canadian Border in the Okanogon Valley. Around noon
each day we were treated to an incredible COMMON NIGHTHAWK display. The
birds over the lake were so numerous they were beyond counting. I am sure
well into the hundreds. They were feeding on mayflies, and at times would
fly within an arm length of us. I have been going to this lake for many
years during this month and this is the first time this has happened. In
the past we would see an occasional bird at dusk, but these birds were
active in the middle of the day.>>>

Well, it so happens that the only reliable place to witness this type
of nighthawk spectacle in BC is in the southern Okanagan Valley (same
valley, different spelling), specifically around the weir on the
Okanagan River near Okanagan Falls Provincial Park. However, these
swarms of nighthawks are usually seen around dusk rather than in broad
daylight as you witnessed. Regardless, I am always pleased to hear of
these events given that the species seems to be in so much trouble in
its more urban haunts. Note that the BC South Okanagan happens to be
overrun with birders this weekend as part of the B.C. Field
Ornithologists Annual General Meeting festivities. Perhaps they might
run into something similar.
