I just purchased Peterson's "Western Birding by Ear" from Amazon. I like
the idea of learning bird songs by grouping them. We moved to the
mountains last summer and this bird sang every night. This year I heard
him again. His songs lasted forever! Unfortunately, I don't own a pair of
binoculars yet as I'm still in the researching stage and this bird prefers
singing in the highest conifers on our property. I visited the following
page http://www.mbr.nbs.gov/id/songwav.html and went through each song.
The birds on the page are Eastern US birds, but the Rose-Breasted
Grosbeak song was almost identical. So I figured it must be a Black-
Headed Grosbeak in the PNW. The day after I identified him, he spent
most of the day on a low branch and flying around so I could get a postive
ID. I like to think I'd earned the right to see him by learning his song. So
I want to learn more.

Good luck,
Nancy
