Today our resident Swainson's Hawk fledged, at least one young. It
was fun to watch it as it soared higher and higher with the two
adults.
This made me think of how many birds nest within 500 feet of our
house. A few are on the neighbors place but still within the 500
feet.
4 or 5 pair of American Robins
3 pair Bewick's Wrens
2 pair Bullock's Orioles
At least one pair of Song Sparrows
1 pair Red-winged Blackbird
1 pair Norther Flickers
4 pair Black-billed Magpies
1 pair Western Wood Peewees
1 pair Ring-necked Pheasant
1 or 2 pair of Black-headed Grosbeaks(I love those birds, they eat
the potato beetles in my garden!)
More Starlings than we like
Several pair of California Quail
Birds we suspect are nesting but we haven't found the nest:
House Sparrow, House Finch, Mourning Dove, Black-capped Chickadee and
we've had Brown-headed Cowbirds in the area so are sure they have
left an egg or two in some nest.
Birds that often nest but haven't seen this year: Mallard, Spotted
Sandpiper, Killdeer, Yellow Warbler, Lazuli Bunting, Western
Kingbird, and Belted Kingfisher.
