Sounds like a nighthawk to me. We saw our first one the other night.
First, I thought it was a violet-green swallow because of the way it flew,
then a hawk the way it glided. But, it was too big for a swallow and the
wings too narrow and notched as you describe. Yesterday, we saw one
again in the evening light above the trees. The light illuminated the wing
bars. Just beautiful.
