As Scott stated brown creepers nest behind peeling bark of older trees, but
he did not point out that they prefer old deciduous trees. However, they do
occasionally nest behind bark of conifers and to prove that about four years
ago we attached several pieces of Doug. Fir bark to the base of the trunk of
a Western Hemlock and the first season a winter wren made a nest behind one
of the strips of bark and the following season a creeper did indeed build
its nest behind one of the other strips of bark, so go figure. BTW, both
nests were successful!
