One possible reason is that we believe sports birdwatchers
to be lovers of birds, and therefore expect them to be
concerned about bird conservation.

One wouldn't expect someone who hates birds to be concerned
about bird conservation, so perhaps the lack of concern
is less offensive in such a case.
