hello eugene.

i have been reading a book about some of the small pacific
islands that you mention. it is a beautifully written book
called _the edge of paradise: america in micronesia_ by
p. f. kluge. it describes the events that took place in the
mariana, caroline, and marshall islands in the mid- to
late-sixties, written by an author who seems to be at least
part poet. i am not sure if you have read or heard about
this book, or what you think about it, but i thought i might
mention it here.

anyway, the reason that i was asking about the boundaries
of your territory is because there are some bird species
that i am especially interested in that live on some of the
islands and island groups that you mentioned. i am interested
in the lories (family: psittacidae, subfamily: loriinae),
and there is one lory that lives on pohnpei, called the
pohnpei (cherry-red) lory, Trichoglossus rubiginosus. have you
ever seen this bird, or read any reports of its status in the
wild? if so, i'd be most interested to learn more about it.
i would also be interested in any references that you might
know of, of databases that you can suggest that i search for
more information, especially for data that are not published
in the traditional ornithological journals.

thanks for your time!

regards,
