Clarice and I just got back from a conference on Portland, Or. Had to spend
most of the time indoors, but thought I'd mention a couple of interesting
moments:

There is a young adult redtail hanging around the one block sized park that
is across the street from Lloyd Center. During one morning stroll through
the park (to clear my head before giving my next workshop-- those hotels are
stuffy) we watched it land in a large Doug fir, and kind of hang out looking
down. Then it rolled off its branch, fell about 3 feet, twisted and threw
its talons upward toward a cone. Caught itself with its wings, and flew to
a nearby perch to snack on a bushtit. Urban life must be serious stuff.

Also saw a big peregrine on top of a building I was told was the office of
Kaiser-Permanente. Driving back we spotted a Turkey vulture above some
rocks by the freeway near Longview and a little farther north spotted a
white tailed kite.
