Thanks to all for the advice on birding near Dungeness Spit. We made it
only to the spit and spent the day hiking to the lighthouse and back.
10 miles carrying more camera gear that I would have taken had I known
my wife was determined to make the entier journey.

We were rewarded with many sightings of birds we rarely see or have
never seen. Among the sightings were black brandts, bald eagles, red
breasted merganzer (female), scoters (not sure what kind they were very
far out), cormorants, Pacific Loon, at least 8 harbor seals, and a
western grebe.

The prize of the day was our first sighting of halequin ducks. We saw
at least 3 males and two females. At one point they were feeding a bit
nearer to the spit than other ducks so I manage to squeeze off 4 or 5
photos before they noticed me and paddled away. It made carrying all of
that gear worthwhile.

P.S. I could not help but notice how many of our "seasoned citizens"
over took and passed us returning from the lighthouse. It makes me look
forward to retirement!
