Monday, March 22
---------------------------
A female MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD, a rare spring and fall passage bird here on
Vancouver Island, was at the north end of Island View Beach in Central
Saanich. The bird was there on March 21 as well.

A massive concentration of gulls has assembled in the Deep Bay area of
eastern Vancouver Island, just in time for the herring spawning season
there. One estimate of 250,000 gulls was received. Other marine birds,
ducks, diving ducks, loons and grebes apparently are not as abundant as
they normally at this time of the year in that area, but they will build
up.

YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS, TURKEY VULTURES and
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS continue to appear in numbers as the spring
progresses.

40 WOOD DUCKS were on the Duncan sewage pond.


Sunday, March 21

A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found on Marine Drive in Royston, B.C., just
south of Courtenay on Vancouver Island.

A first winter GLAUCOUS GULL and a EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL were on
the Highoaks Farm property on Hastings flats in Saanich.

A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was on Jocelyn Hill in the Highlands district.


Saturday, March 20

2 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS and a TOWNSEND'S WARBLER were at Rithet's Bog in
Saanich.


**The monthly Birders' Night is this Wednesday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m.
in Room 159 of the Begbie Building at University of Victoria. Anna
Young of Victoria will present a slide-illustrated talk on the
mysterious Marbled Murrelets of Southern Vancouver Island. Everyone is
welcome. Bring a friend, your coffee mug and your binoculars.**
