Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This
recording was made Thursday March 24. If you have anything to add call
Harry Nehls at 233-3976.

The GYRFALCON is still being seen in the Brownsmead area. The male TUFTED
DUCK remains near Bingen. On March 20 it was on Locke Lake, the first
lake east of town. The BLUE JAY is still in mid-town Bend. It was last
reported near the corner of Chamberlain and Florida Streets. The Coquille
Valley EASTERN PHOEBE apparently has left the area.

Many migrant SAVANNAH and VESPER SPARROWS, SWAINSON'S HAWKS, GREEN
HERONS, and VARIED THRUSHES were reported during the week, and there was
a noticeable movement of PACIFIC LOONS and WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS just
offshore. On March 20 an OLDSQUAW was flying north off Tierra Del Mar
with a flock of scoters. COMMON MURRES and PIGEON GUILLEMOTS are now
moving toward shore and into the estuaries.

The March 20 offshore boat trip out of Depoe Bay found few birds, but
only went out 16 miles. Quite a few KITTIWAKES are still around. Two
early SABINE'S GULLS were seen, as were one BLACK-FOOTED ALBATROSS, a
PINK-FOOTED and 9 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, and 8 FULMARS.

A SAY'S PHOEBE was on the North Spit of Coos Bay March 18. Single WILLETS
are now at Coos Bay and at Yaquina Bay. The EMPEROR GOOSE continues to be
seen along Fenk Road west of Tillamook. On March 19 a VESPER SPARROW was
on the Bayocean Spit Trail and a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was at
Garibaldi.

On March 19 a SWAINSON'S HAWK was at the Smith-Bybee Lake Wildlife Area
in North Portland. The large flocks of WHITE-FRONTED GEESE are still in
Scappoose Bottoms and at least 12 GREAT EGRETS are still in that area. A
flock of at least 10 GREAT EGRETS are along Springhill Road between
Monmouth and Albany. About 10,000 DUNLIN are now gathered at Baskett
Slough NWR.

On March 19 two adult RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS were perched together along
Perkins Road south of Fern Ridge Reservoir. Among the many swallows over
the reservoir that day were some CLIFF SWALLOWS.

On March 20 a MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD, 2 SAY'S PHOEBES, 3 VESPER SPARROWS, and
a BREWER'S SPARROW were among the many birds at Detroit Flats at the
upper end of Detroit Lake, in the Cascades east of Salem.

At least 30 SAGE GROUSE were on the Millican Lek during the week.

ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS are now moving through Central
Oregon.

Up to 20,000 SNOW GEESE are now at Summer Lake, with only a few ROSS'S
GEESE mixed in. Now is the time to visit Summer Lake and Miller Island in
the Klamath Basin to see the migrant waterfowl.

Thats it for this week.
