I know that you normaly don't look at local things but since this involved
Salmon (and birds) I decided that I'd e-mail anyone that might be
interested.

I am a student at Shorewood High School in Shoreline, Washington and an
active member of (SAFE) Student Action For the Environment. I am concerned
about the proposed building of a Little League baseball field in Shoreview
park. The preferred site would be in the most environmentally damaging
area.

The Little League's main reason for building the field there (at
Shoreview) is the acquisition of a Mariner grant for $75,000. The
requirements for the usage of the grant is that they have to build the
field in Shoreview. The preferred site is called "Site A" this site is
home to more than 65 different species of birds. Yet it will cost more to
do it at the sites within Shoreview boundaries instead of on School
district property like what many other school districts are doing which
would cost only around a half million dollars instead of the two million
that the city will spend if the proposal goes on as planned.

I, personally, don't think the Mariners should support this proposal but
if they are going to they should be very ashamed of themselves for not
caring about the shrinking habitat here in Washington.

I believe that if the residents of Shoreline, and maybe even people
outside of Shoreline, knew all of this they would protest. Also if the
city council actually looked at the data from recently instead of 25 years
ago they would realize that people around here enjoy passive recreation
more than active.

In the Final Environmental Impact Statement it tells of the damage the 25
to 40 space parking lot would have on Ronald Bog. The damage said to be
very important was the water flow into the already high Ronald Bog. The
130 space parking lot at Shoreview would do worse damage by letting the
water flow into Boeing Creek then directly into Puget Sound, where some
Salmon, (which we all know came under federal protection on March 16th)
are at times.

Most of us tend to over look the obvious problem of fertilizer, and I have
heard that the city has asked people at 145th St. to not use very much
fertilizer on their lawns due to the inability to stop it from going into
the ground water, yet the baseball field will use much more and will allow
it to flow almost unfiltered in to Boeing Creek.

This issue is very troublesome to me, I feel that the public needs to
know, but not enough do. Thank you so very much for your precious time. I
would be glad to give any assistance to you if you do a story.

Sincerely,
Danielle M. Frazel
