the South Jetty of the Columbia River, Clatsop Co., OR
27 Mar 1999 1020hr-1050hr

Tide:near high
Weather: mostly cloudy
Wind SW 20; Temp 50F

Method: 30 minute station count at viewing platform on
SJCR using 20x60 Bushnell spotting scope and 8x50 Bushnell
binoculars. Birds were sorted as to flyby, sitting on beach, sitting
on ocean or sitting on river.

Flyby Ocean beach river total
Common Loon COLO 2 2
Pacific Loon PALO 3 3
FORK-TAILED STORM-PETREL FTSP 2 2
Surf Scoter SUSC 63 2 65
White-wing Scoter WWSC 16 16

West Gull WEGU 8 8
GW Gull GWGU 10 10
WestxG-W wxgw 3 3
gull sp gull 20 20
Western Sandpiper WESA 300

Notes: The ocean was extremely rough. Bird may have been sitting on
the surface, but the heavy seas made it nearly impossible to see.
Two FORK-TAILED STORM-PETRELS flew near the viewing platform. A
single unidentified jaeger (most probably PARASITIC JAEGER) flew by
just beyond the breakers. A large flock of WESTERN SANDPIPERS (running
a bit early) came up off the river beach, heading south.

Mike Patterson I don't swear for the hell of it.
Astoria, OR Language is a poor enough means of communication
mpatters at orednet.org and we've got to use all the words we've got....
Besides, there are damn few words anybody understands
