Subject: ???Western Bluebirds and incubating strategy???

Hi Tweeters

I'm puzzled.

We have had Western Bluebirds coming and going to a nest box for a long
time. Recently we have seen them arrive and spend significant periods of
time in the box. When both the male and female exited and left the area, I
checked the box and there are eggs. I also noticed that there were several
bright blue tail feathers sticking out one side of the nest. I then
wondered why there would be what seemed to be a number of tail feathers in
good condition. Re-opening the box I looked quickly and there appears to be
a dead male in the nest with eggs showinging on one side of it. There had
been at least two pairs ranging around the area and we had been
occassionally seeing what I assumed were both pairs as recently as
yesterday.

Any comments or suggestions?
