Every year 5+ million birds are being slaughtered by communication
towers. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act prohibits the killing of migratory
birds unless such killing is exempted and yet the buildout of 150,000 plus
towers and the the new HDTV towers continues.

We, as Americans, must stand strong as David did when faced with
Goliath and work diligently with our Senators to repeal some of the broad
provisions of the Telecommmuications Act of 96. Senator Olympia J. Snowe,
a member of the Senate Commerce Committee, has expressed to me that she
shares in our concerns about the impact of communication towers on
wildlife. Why not call her today (1-800-432-1599) and ask that she keep
your views in mind should the 106th Congress consider legislation that
would stop this escalation of bird towerkill.

The American Ornithologist's Union is hosting a first workshop of
it's kind on avian mortality/collision at communication towers on Aug. 11
at Cornell University's Statler hotel. For more information contact Julie
St. Louis at USFWS Office of Migratory Bird Management (703) 358-1824.
