A recent thread on Tweeters shared information about choosing
binoculars. The most recent (Spring 1999) issue of "Living Bird",
published by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology
(http://birds.cornell.edu), contains a thorough article reviewing over
60 different bins ranging in price from under $100 to nearly $2000, by a
team ranging from beginners to professional ornithologists. Although it
certainly doesn't evaluate everything, it's the most comprehensive such
review I've ever seen.

Anyone who doesn't belong to the lab may find that their local
library has the mag?
