Here's an update on the Green Lake Bald Eagles. Last Friday was two weeks
since the egg hatched (based on change in adult behavior from incubating to
brooding and feeding "something" in the nest).
After two weeks young develop the strength to stand up; they double in
height overnight. That's when they start poking their heads over the edge of
the nest.
I observed several feedings from the Aqua Theater this past weekend and
there appears to be one chick. A very well-fed chick!. On Saturday both
adults were feeding it at the same time! Never saw that before.
A crow made a single pass at the family and the male eagle gave chase. After
the crow retreated to the underbrush the male circled out over the lake,
caught a good size (1 1/2' / 50 cm) carp and brought it back to the nest.
Out and back in less than two minutes.
For those of you who wish to observe the domestic life of Bald Eagles, I
cannot recommend the Aqua Theater enough. An hour there and you're
guaranteed to see some neat stuff.
The Aqua Theater is at the south end of Green Lake (north end of Seattle).
Go up in the concrete stands, about 3/4 of the way, face west, look across
the blue tubular steel "tower." The nest is in the left fir tree across the
street. Also look a bit farther south (from the top of the Aqua Theater),
the birds' favorite perch is in the dead-topped fir tree next to the Off
Leash area.
