The native red fox, generally regarded as a distinct subspecies of
Vulpes fulva (Vulpes vulpes if you prefer), is associated with
subalpine habitat, the high elevations where trees become sparse
and meadows become a dominant part of the landscape. Everything we
city dwellers see down here near sea level is almost certainly
derived from fur farm stock released or escaped a long time ago.
