I forgot to mention that Monday last week, while working off the south west
end of Whidbey Island, our skipper Steve Aubert pointed out a Northern
Elephant Seal that was in the main channel; this male sat high in the water
for minutes at a time, allowing us good looks from a distance. It's only the
second that I've seen in this region, and Steve had seen just a few in his
many years of skippering.
Bird-wise it was fairly quiet, a large flock of brant in the main channel, a
few marbled murrelets, rhino auklets and pigeon guillemots.
