Hello Tweets,

My mother and I birded mainly Clark and Cowlitz Cos. today, but on our way
home at 5pm we stopped by the Lacey clearcut with brief observation of a
adult NORTHERN GOSHAWK flying through dense forest at the SE corner of the
clearcut. A single MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER was also present in dense Scotch
Broom and several CHIPPING SPARROWS. Going back to the beginning of our day
at Steigerwald NWR, east of Washougal, after looking for dragonflies at
Lacamas Lake for a SPINY BASKETTAIL, which did not find upon two attempts,
we first scoped from Hwy.14, the several ponds visible from the road, with
a pair of WILSON'S PHALAROPES, 5 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 1 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, and 4 CINNAMON TEAL. We later walked the dike path along the
Columbia River at the south border of the refuge with 25+ PURPLE MARTINS
including nesting birds in the nestboxes along the trail, 2 WESTERN
KINGBIRDS, 4 YELLOW WARBLERS, 2 GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS, 1 LINCOLN'S
SPARROW, and 2 HOUSE WRENS calling from the Cottonwood trees on the refuge.
A female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was present along the Washougal River at Camas.
At Kress Lake in Cowlitz Co., we birded in partial rain, but our first
BULLOCK'S ORIOLE and BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK of the season were seen, where a
single NASHVILLE WARBLER was seen by my mother yesterday, while she looked
unsuccessfully for dragonflies, possibly due to the fairly cold
temperatures still present. After birding the Lacey clearcut, we had our
first GREEN HERON of the season, flying over I-5 at Lakewood, near a small
wetland.

Good Birding,

Ruth and Patrick Sullivan
