Dear Tweeters,
I have to write and give credit to Kevin Li for the continuing initiative and
great work he's doing and expense he's going to on behalf of Purple Martens at
many sites including Shilshole, the Duwamish, the ship canal and Marymoor.
Kevin built Marten boxes (Jack Davis-style) again all day Saturday for use at
Nisqually Landing. This is a site that has had Martens nesting in the past
but where almost all of the boxes had suffered severe weather damage. Kevin
along with Chris Baker had already been busy at the sight, having driven down
and put up several new boxes there Friday night.
Delia Scholes and I tagged along on Saturday night (yesterday) when there
would be a high tide at 7pm. On our way down, Chris saw a COMMON
NIGHTHAWK(!) over I-5 in Tacoma. At Nisqually Landing there were at least 2
BLACK SWIFTS with the Tree Swallows, Cliff Swallows and Barn Swallows, and at
least one box was already occupied by a pair of tame Purple Martens, (the male
looking very regal sitting on his front porch in the low evening light). When
we got the canoe back on the car, there were a new total 12 potential Marten
homes.
