I don't add a bird to my life list unless i've seen it.

with one exception, clapper rails.

But once it's on my life list, if i'm in an appropriate area and hear what
i think is that bird I'll list it for that trip.

I've been thinking of making lots of exceptions on my next shorebirding
trip. I've decided to become a seagull expert based on sound alone.
Plumage is just too confusing. Especially on teenybopper gulls.
