When you see these lists of plants from nurseries to attract especially
butterflies, please be sure you check them out in other sources. Most of
these lists contain buddleia davidii, known as butterfly bush, which is a
big, beautiful shrub on
almost every nursery's butterfly plant list. It is also being considered for
addition to the noxious weed list of Washington. It is an extremely invasive
plant of moist areas, like riparian habitats, and is becoming a real problem
along the Cedar River and in many other areas. It even appeared in the
latest issue of Audubon magazine as a recommended butterfly plant!

Gorgeous as it is, it appears to be possibly the next purple loosestrife,
and I would hate to see more people plant it.

Molbak's nursery also offers free handouts for their customers; one of which
is "plants that attract hummingbirds and butterflies." It breaks down the
list into sun vs. shade plants, as well as annuals, perennials, shrubs, and
herbs.

FWIW, they also offer great pamphlets on rose varieties, container
gardening, indoor plants for various types of light, etc. Just go to any
one of the kiosks in the greenhouse area of their stores.

Gotta love that Molbak's.

About a year ago I attended a presentation in Bellevue, Washington put on by
a gentlemen named Brett Johnson. He had conducted some testing of many
different plants to determine what the local hummingbirds liked. From this
testing he had put together a pamphlet which ranked which plants worked for
attracting hummers. You can try to reach him at his nursery, Green Man
Gardens, at 206-232-5734 or email him at BnBJohns at msn.com

Hope this helps.
