How do I put this? Umm, I traveled out to San Juan last Sunday since I am
leaving the West coast, and wanted to see these birds as well. I trudged
all through all the areas in all the books, including wandering all
through the field in Steve M's wonderful 100 Most Wanted Birds Book, for
hours. Nothing. It wasn't until I was starting to get slightly
hysterical at my inability to find these bird, that out of no where
appeared the Park Ranger.

"Whatcha looking for?" he asked casually.
"Eurasian Sky Larks." I responded, with a slight curtness the ranger
didn't deserve.
"Found any yet?"
"Nope."

"Well if you do," he added with a slight smile, make sure you come do to
the ranger station and tell me. They've pretty much been wiped out by the
fox population. Haven't seen any yet this year." He paused. Noticing the
expression on my face, crushed disappointment and horror, he kindly added,
"You can find them over in Vancouver, though."

Needless to say. I saw no skylarks, even though I hung in there pretty
much all day.

Sorry to add such a sad note here.
