I camped at Palouse Falls St. Park on wednesday night but stopped along
Dodson Rd. along the way. I was able to photo my favorite bird of all time,
the Great Horned Owl (much thanks Dan Victor!). Since owl watching has about
a 40% success rate I am "forced" to enjoy the wonderful birdlife along the
way. Lot's of Red-Wing BBirds, I photo'd a Yellow-headed BBird (really
neat), I made friends with a killdeer (I think it wanted to come home with
me), and lot's of waterfowl that I'm just not good enough to identify! On
the 2 mile dirt road to Palouse Falls I enjoyed some ground-birds such as
quail and pheasants, and finally at the falls I enjoyed lot's of common
songbirds such as varied thrushes, robins and warblers. I also watched some
hunting Kestrels (first time for me). Nothing too rare that I'm aware of but
probably wouldn't know a rare bird if it held up a sign. I do, however,
recommend Palouse Falls but watch out for Rattlesnakes because I almost
stepped on one. Enjoy! Bryan Mathews,
