I was out of town for a while, and am just now sifting through old
Tweeters messages, so I'm just now responding to this.

I had a friend who drove from Boston out to western Mass, equipped
with tape, to search for the uncommon (at least in those parts)
cerulean warbler. He and his group went to the target area and played
a tape. Sure enough, it got a response. They got closer and played
it again, and it got another response.

It wasn't long before two parties of human warbler-wannabes got close
enough to ID each other...

In the case of owls in particular, how does one know one's not just
listening to another birder with a tape? ; )

(Yes, I do count heard birds for my own list).
