There is a short story from the collection "Greasy Lake" by T.C. Boyle
called "A Bird in Hand" that is in two parts: 1980 describing the
impact of clouds of starlings in the US and 1890 describing the
inspiration of one Eugene Schiefflin in New York who decided to import
and release every species of bird mentioned in the works of Shakespeare
in order to bring culture to America. Interesting story but how accurate
I would not venture a guess. Hans
