I learned today that WDFW is conducting a survey on hunting rules and
regulations on their website. Of particular concern is the question about
the use of lead shot for upland bird hunting--to continue to use it, or
restrict it in various ways.
The reason for asking the question is that on lands owned by WDFW and
pheasant release occurs, lead shot is OK for upland birds, but banned for
waterfowl hunting. This happens even when the land is used by both groups
of birds. So lead gets put into more waterbird habitat.
A recent study just completed shows that on a site near Sequim, the lead
shot level is the same high level as in the Skagit Valley. We have been
asking WDFW to stop the use of lead here for several years. They are now
considering it. BUT......
WDFW is now asking for public input regarding should the rules be
changed for lead shot in upland bird hunting (although as you will see it is
targeting at hunters).
The situtation is serious for all non-target birds that use our public
lands. There needs to be an immediate ban on the use of lead shot for all
birds in Washington. This will protect our waterfowl and non-target species
such as shorebirds, songbirds, gulls, and raptors from lead poisoning.

You do not need to be a hunter to vote. In the space for hunting license #
put in Parking Permit. Also, you can skip down to birds only section.
We need to encourage WDFW to stop the use of lead shot which continues
to kill swans, ducks, geese, shorebirds, raptors and others.
