Barbara, Dorothea and I had a couple of hours on Saturday afternoon and
Sunday morning to do some birding in the area, so we went down to Fort
Canby and the Columbia jetty late Friday afternoon. The weather was
stormy, the water very rough, though the rain spatters were
intermittent. In the twilight the highlights were two Black-legged
Kittiwakes from the jetty, also Pelagic Cormorants, and a single Brown
Pelican. On the bay side near Fort Canby we saw cormorants and ducks and
a lone Western Grebe taking shelter from the wind. Sunday morning was
clear so we headed out toward Leadbetter Point, though the receding tide
was allowing the shorebirds to scatter across Willapa Bay. The
highpoint here was two Peregrine Falcons who scattered the ducks and
shorebirds even more. Willapa Bay still has thousands of shorebirds,
mainly Western Sandpipers though we saw others, too. All together we
saw 48 species for two and a half hours outside.
