This is the Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society Bird Alert for October

On October 11, 1999, I [Bob Woodley] saw two SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS and an
immature COOPER?S HAWK on Bateman Island and a lone AMERICAN AVOCET on the
Yakima Delta with the other shorebirds. The following day there was one
RED-NECKED GREBE along Nelson Island and a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and an
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER appeared in Grove?s Park.

On October 13, 1999, Nancy LaFramboise observed two BONAPARTE?S GULLS on
the upper end of Nelson Island and a female CANVASBACK off Columbia Point.
That same day I noted four GREATER YELLOWLEGS and seventy-one LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHERS on the Yakima Delta.

On October 15, 1999, Nancy LaFramboise found two female SURF SCOTERS off
of Two-Rivers Park plus two flocks of BONAPARTE?S GULLS and an immature
BALD EAGLE in the park. The following day Nancy and I saw the first DUNLIN
in the fall over the Yakima Delta and then also a female COMMON MERGANSER.


On October 18, 1999, I found about twenty BONAPARTE?S GULLS on the Delta,
and on October 20, 1999, I saw five REDHEADS and four LESSER SCAUP there.

Craig Corder and Judy Stevens discovered two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS,
three HERMIT THRUSH, and an AMERICAN PIPIT on Bateman Island on October 23,
1999. While along the Audobon nature trail in Columbia Park they heard a
probable FOX SPARROW.

On October 24, 1999, Dennis Rockwell reported two DUNLIN, seventeen
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and thirty-one COMMON SNIPE on the Yakima Delta,
while in the following day, Nancy LaFramboise saw two HOODED and four
COMMON MERGANSERS, two BONAPARTE?S GULLS, and still at least five BARN
SWALLOWS on the Delta, plus a LINCOLNS SPARROW on Bateman Island.
Secondly, I saw six LEAST SANDPIPERS and four DUNLIN on the Delta and a
HERMIT THRUSH, four CEDAR WAXWINGS, another LINCOLN?S SPARROW, and a
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on Bateman Island.
