Last winter I tried several models at Seattle sporting goods stores. All
were made in Russia. I purchased one of the monocular models, with the
understanding I could return it if not satisfied.

I installed fresh batteries, waited for maximum (in-city) darkness, and
carefully followed the instructions. I was barely able to make out a tree
about twenty feet away. Had there been a bird in/on this tree, I doubt if
I could have told much about it other than perhaps the size. Very
disappointing! I returned the scope.

I have no doubt been spoiled by an opportunity to once use a current
model military unit; simply no comparison. They are much heavier, draw
much more power, and are many times more expensive. I'd suggest arranging
a visit to the nearest Army base some dark evening; the PR person may
well be able to let you see what is possible. I understand that some
local police agencies may also have access to the military standard
devices.

Good luck!
