Scott and Tweeters: I've had this exact experience with a single 'squawk' in
response to a more traditional owl call. The noise sounds like what I
describe as a coffin opening. Well....I blindly followed that noise into the
Okanogans not knowing what juvenile owl I would find and it turned out to be
an adult BARRED OWL. I was surprised. I've also had in the past, Great
Horned's calling in response to Barred Owls and vice versa.
As
for that urban calling GREAT-HORNED, I live in the middle of West Campus
which is 'townhouse heaven' and I love it because every winter I get calling
Great Horned's right here in the neighborhood. I tell my wife that they're
just saying 'hi' to me because they know I love them so much. Bryan
