After having one of those mornings I decided to use lunchtime to swing over
toward Lake Sammamish and see what I could see in the bird department.
First I went to look where I thought the eagle nesting tree had gone down
and confirmed that I indeed had that location right. I checked out the
Sammamish outlet area and saw the usual suspects, nothing exciting. I
decided to drive south down West Lake Sammammish Parkway to visit friends
and bum lunch. At the corner of NE 48th St and West Lake Sammammish Parkway
NE I spotted a mixed flock of twig pickers and pulled over. The flock was
composed of 2 CHESTNUT BACKED CHICKADEES, 8 YR WARBLERS, about 6 of each GC
and RC KINGLETS, a suspected ORANGE CROWNED WARBLER and whaddya know the
BLUE GREY GNATCATCHER that more or less disappeared what seems like several
weeks ago. The birds were working as they typically do flying from tree to
tree checking branches, and picking bugs. They eventually moved too far
east (back towards the river/lake) for me to follow or see. This area is
south and west of where the GNATCATCHER was seen in the past. Looks like we
have 2 of this very rare visitor in Washington at once - WOW. Keep your
eyes peeled.
