Hi Tweets,

I have received a request from a colleague of mine related to reviewing a
Corps of Engineers permit request to light up the Aurora Bridge. Given the
past threads on lighting effects, I think this would be a good opportunity
to provide sound information on the effects of lighting, and the use of the
bridge by peregrines. Please see the highlighted request below from the
permit reviewer, Lori Morris:

I am reviewing a project that will illuminate the Aurora Bridge from dusk to
midnight on weeknights and dusk to 2 a.m. on weekends with a series of
lights placed in the water or on land. The lights point directly at the
bridge and illuminate it with blue light. It is my understanding that a
peregrine nest is located under the bridge. I am wondering how many
peregrine and peregrine nests we have in Seattle, and what affect the lights
might have on them during their nesting season.

This is also a good time to comment on the use of the bridge by raptors in
the winter months, as well as overall impacts of lights on birds.

Please send your responses back to me. I will compile them and send them on
to Lori as well as the list. Because of the timing of the permit review, we
need the responses by Friday, November 19, 1999.

Thanks,

Mike Scuderi
