Birders,

Just before 8 A.M. this morning, as I was leaving for work, I
observed a flock of about 20 COMMON REDPOLLS feeding on the seeds of 3
birch trees just in front of my apartment block.
Peter McAllister of Upper Hat Creek, B.C. (about 50-60 miles west
of Kamloops) has been seeing large numbers of redpolls around his
ranch for the last 2 weeks. On Nov. 1, Peter reported a total of 610
Common Redpolls in several flocks along 8 km of road near Upper Hat
Creek. In a posting on Nov. 13, he reported that he was still seeing
"hundreds" every day. Also, on November 7, Andy Raniseth and I heard a
single Common Redpoll flying overhead at Lac Le Jeune, about 25 miles
S of Kamloops.
There was a report of a single Common Redpoll a few days ago by
Frank Conley in Wallowa County, NE Oregon.
We could well be in for a widespread redpoll invasion east of the
Cascades this winter. Has anyone seen redpolls yet in E Washington or
N Idaho?
