Subject: WHOOPER SWAN UPDATE-- MAMIT LAKE, B.C.

Birders,

Although I have not heard of any sightings of the 3 Whooper Swans
(1 adult and 2 immatures) at Mamit Lake, B.C., on Monday, November 15,
they were reportedly seen again by four birders from Kelowna
yesterday, November 16. They have now been there for 10 days since
their date of discovery on November 7th.
I have received a couple of requests for directions to Mamit Lake
(also called Mamette Lake). Most birders will probably be arriving
from the south via Provincial Highway 5 (the so-called Coquihalla
Freeway). When heading north on Highway 5, take Exit 286 and proceed
about 3 km to Merritt. (Distances are approximate.) From downtown
Merritt, take Highway 8 west toward Spences Bridge. At about km 5, you
will reach the intersection of Highway 97C. Turn right (north) on
Highway 97C toward Logan Lake. The south end of Mamit Lake, where the
Whooper Swans are usually seen, is about 22 km north of Highway 8 (and
16 km south of Logan Lake). The lake is about 3.5 km long and 0.5 km
wide, and lies on the west side of the highway.
Good luck, swan-searchers, and if you do see the swans, please
post an E-mail note or leave a phone message on the Vancouver rare
bird alert tape (604-737-3074). Thank you!
