Fifteen members of The Vancouver Audubon Society joined me for on
Saturday for a rip up the Gorge into Klickitat County. We had left most
of the morning showers behind by the time we reached Bingen. One of the
first birds that we came across in the Columbia was a juvenile COMMON
LOON and on the dolphins off of Bingen Pond there were a pair of
PEREGRINE FALCONS bathed in bright sunlight.
A stop at Doug's Beach produced seven of the nine species of raptors
found during the day. The species seen here were BALD EAGLE, NORTHERN
HARRIER, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, COOPER'S HAWK, RED-TAILED HAWK, ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK, and AMERICAN KESTREL. There was also an albino BEWICK'S WREN
skulking near the picnic tables.
On the Dalles Mountain Road we came across a flock of about 150 AMERICAN
GOLDFINCHES that contained at least one COMMON REDPOLL.
On our way home we stopped at the White Salmon High School an found 10
WILD TURKEYS in the fields to the Northwest of the school. This is a
fairly reliable spot to see these birds in the Gorge.
