Thanks to Fred for the bibliographic note on local parrots. Just one minor
taxonomic point. Fred says that the Crimson-fronted Parakeet occurs is the
mountains of northwestern South America. However, the AOU 7th edition 1998
describes the range of that species (Aratinga finschi) as southeastern
Nicaragua through western Panama, replaced in South America by the closely
related (and perhaps sometimes treated as conspecific) White-eyed Parakeet
(Aratinga leucophthalmus). Perhaps the term Crimson-fronted Parakeet is
sometimes used to refer to the two populations together?
