hey tweeters: it was nice at the refuge this morning!! over the field had
N. HARRIERS and 2 BALD EAGLES. Along the dike trail there were 2 PILEATED
WOODPECKERS working on an old dead tree. I found the scattered BARN OWL
feathers that were reported a couple weeks ago and noted as a presumed GREAT
HORNED OWL meal. Well, I did some extra detective work in that general area
and found 2/3 of a BARN OWL'S wing in complete tact. It was approximately 60
feet from where I found other Barn Owl components. Now, I'm no homocide
detective but this voracious Great Horned must have killed this Barn Owl and
ripped it's wing off in one location, then carried it's prey some distance to
where it feasted. I was talking to a refuge volunteer about what I found and
we both agree that there ain't a badder bird in the land. If i ever get an
'owl web-site' going I will display a photo of a Nisqually Great Horned
sitting up in a tree with a lifeless Great-Blue Heron in it's grasp. Such is
