In an article titled "Identifying Common and Hoary Redpolls in Winter"
(BIRDING, Vol. XXVII: #6, Dec. 1995),
Dave Czaplak presented a detailed list of characteristics for seperating
these species and indicated that undertail coverts were the most reliable
feature to use in this regard. Other useful characteristics, listed in
descending order of their reliability, were: rump, mantle, flank
streaking, breast and rump color of adult males, size and structure, bill
shape, wings, head.
