Since so many so kindly responded to my ID plea,
decided to just post this to Tweeters.

I finally got a chance to check out my Audubon CD
which has the bird calls on it (it usually locks up my
computer so I don't like to use it). Based on that
and the various responses, I've pretty much come to
the conclusion that they were probably Red Crossbills.
In fact I've seen Crossbills in the past, closeup,
but hadn't seen them from this particular "aspect" so
didn't connect! (the first time was in my parents yard
in Fauntleroy, SW Seattle, in a low pine tree in the
back yard--that was a LOOOOONG time ago). Thanks to
everyone who responded. I've learned so much in the
couple of weeks since I started "Tweeting."
