I dropped off my 14 year old daughter and her friend at South Center mall
and visited the Green River Natural Resources Area. What a great contrast
to the incredibly busy roads and building/parking lot complexes that
dominate the valley around Kent.

There were hundreds of Northern Pintails and American Wigeons on the pond,
along with Gadwalls, Shovelers, Ruddy Ducks, Buffleheads, Common and Hooded
Mergansers, Ring-necked Ducks, Coots and Scaup. The highlight for me was a male
Redhead, apparently accompanied by a female Redhead (though the distance
was great and I couldn't absolutely rule out a female Ring-necked Duck).

I also flushed two Short-eared Owls while walking to one of the observation
towers. One of them perched in a tree where viewing was easy.

Coyotes had left droppings of berry seeds, apple remains, and Italian prune
pits all along the trail and I eventually saw one as it topped a rise and
looked at me for a moment before dropping back down into the tall grass.

I really wanted to see a Peregrine Falcon since I have seen the species listed
many times when Tweeters report on their trips to this area. I seldom see
Peregrines and always treasure a sighting. Northern Harriers were regularly
visible flying about the grasslands. I also saw a juvenile Cooper's Hawk and
several Red-tailed Hawks. But, no Peregrine Falcon for me.

All-in-all a very enjoyable way to spend some time during a break in the rain.
I really like the towers that have been installed at several locations on
the property. I wonder how much they cost. I could think of a few places to
put towers to enhance wildlife viewing.
