It sounds like you saw a Scrub Jay. That's a somewhat unusual bird for
western Washington, which is why it is not in your "Birds of Seattle" book.
After years of birding I have yet to see one in Washington State (although I
have not chased the ones that are reported from time to time).
It is time to get a more comprehensive field guide. National Geographic
guide is the favorite for most, but the others all have their supporters. I
would suggest a trip to the Audubon store and look up your Scrub Jay, and
but the one that you think represents the bird the best.
Nice description of the bird by the way! Those observation skills will serve
you well in the field. The ability to look at a bird and describe it
accurately is something we should all work on.
